SCAPES

SCAPES

The series Scapes consists of textile tapestries and wall objects, as well as paintings with oil crayon. The works are undefined and abstracted, with an emotional link to natural beauty and dreamy scenes at the same time.

Central to these works is the concept of transition: of textures and structures, and the visual effects that result from these changes. As in Lim A Po's other work, this series is about layering. The works play with continuous adding and removing, in which form, movement, line play, detail and texture are essential. Contrasting materials merge, and subtle colour palettes create harmony.

In the paintings of this series, Lim A Po uses oil crayons to create the same kind of lines as the threads in the tapestries. Here, too, there is an ever-repeating build-up and breakdown of shapes, colours, and lines during the process, in her search for a harmonious image. The result in these paintings is a kind of graphic pattern. Lim A Po vigorously places vertical lines in bold oil crayon over the composition, just as the threads fall over the tapestry. Although the strokes of the oil crayon are direct and expressive gestures, they also have a certain softness to them. They are not completely even and opaque, and do not run perfectly straight across the canvas. This gives the work a lively appearance, contrasting with the colours of the background surfaces that together form the abstract composition.
