SCAPES

SCAPES

Textile design has been Lim A Po’s mind for years. The tactility, texture, and diversity in application appeal to her. Her fascination for the craft is also reflected in this.

The series Scapes consists of textile tapestries and wall objects, as well as paintings with oil crayon. The works are undefined and abstracted, with an emotional link to natural beauty and dreamy scenes at the same time.

Central to these works is the concept of transition: of textures and structures, and the visual effects that result from these changes. As in Lim A Po's other work, this series is about layering. The works play with continuous adding and removing, in which form, movement, line play, detail and texture are essential. Contrasting materials merge, and subtle colour palettes create harmony.

Whereas Lim A Po's previous works were previously mainly bound to the flat surface, the three-dimensionality in the Scapes series is now literal and tangible. In some works, we can run our hand through the fibers of the textile; other works entice us to push the curtains of the hanging threads aside, to discover thick layers of paint and texture.

OBJECTS

OBJECTS

In addition to the large tapestry Arcadia, the Scapes series also consists of smaller abstract textile wall objects made of eucalyptus. With these hybrid objects, she presents the changeability of textiles: they are objects at the intersection of painting and textile art, which mainly revolve around the transition of materials.

For this series, Lim A Po has researched the changeability of texture: the transition from soft materials to hard, from glossy to matte, from recognizable to indefinable. This transition of the texture of the material also changes its character. The result is a textile object that is recognizable and abstract. At the same time, it evokes a duality in the experience. The structural change in the textile brings the objects to an abstract oddity.

The layered construction creates craters in the deep pile threads, transforms the structures of the knotted textures into knotty forms of paint and creates a new experience of what we see and feel. In this way the work invites to be touched, to feel whether what we see corresponds to what we can feel.
